Commercial Salt Applicators certified by NHDES Green SnowPro under RSA 489-C, and property owners or managers who hire them, are granted limited liability protection against damages arising from snow and ice conditions under RSA 508:22.
How do I become a certified NHDES Salt Applicator?
Individuals who have attended the Green SnowPro Training and passed the exam are eligible to apply for the voluntary NHDES Salt Applicator Certification. To obtain your certification from NHDES and obtain limited liability relief for you and your clients from slip and falls, you must:
- Take the Green SnowPro Full Course and pass the exam with Slawsby Insurance as your Guide
- Fill out and submit to NHDES the Salt Applicator Certification Form for Initial or Renewal certification (certification expires every year on June 30).
- Send applications in with a check made out to Treasurer, State of NH. Send check and application to:

Maintaining your NHDES Salt Applicator Certification:
- Annually no later than June 15, fill out and submit with payment to NHDES the Salt Applicator Certification form for Initial or Renewal Certification(certification expires every year on June 30).
- Every two years attend a Green SnowPro Refresher Course. Available exams are listed at the bottom of the page.
- Every five years, attend an in-person course or take the online Full Green SnowPro Course and pass the exam. Available exams are listed at the bottom of the page.
- Annually submit your total salt usage using the Annual Salt Accounting Form. To ensure maximum liability protection, also keep track of your activities for each storm event including each site visit, target application rates, weather conditions and use of recommended best practices.

Can I train my own employees?
Only If you hold a VALID Master Certification AND you have submitted an application for approved training program through NHDES. NHDES will provide you with the tools you need to effectively and appropriately train your employees.
